Defence Family Matters : May 2017
DFMMay2017 ABOUT DEFENCE FAMILIES OF AUSTRALIA DFA is the official body appointed by government to represent the views of Defence families. Its aim is to inform government and Defence on the needs of the family. Its goal is to ensure quality of life for all Defence families by providing a recognised forum for their views and by reporting, making recommendations and including policy that directly affects families. In turn, this enhances the capability of the ADF. DFA consults with Defence’s own support agencies, such as the Defence Community Organisation and the National Welfare Coordination Centre but acts only as an advocate, not as a support provider. Defence families can contact DFA to represent them regarding an individual situation or to advocate an issue concerning many families. We have seen great traction on these projects and will work to provide updates on our progress in the coming months. We have been enthused by our ability to work with stakeholders on: working to have internet recognised as a minimum standard in all DHA homes collaborating with the Services on improvements to family support practices consultation with Defence and DHA on the minimum standards of housing amenities, known as capital inclusions working on the roll-out of ForceNet which will ultimately offer families a secure connection to units/ships/squadrons and Command the introduction and continued roll-out of security screens in areas of Adelaide the 2017 ADF Families Survey which focuses on, among other things, partner employment. We look forward to continuing our advocacy and working with Defence to find solutions to these issues, particularly partner employment, which we know affects many families. DFA National Delegates in all regions are currently preparing to collect feedback prior to our national conference which is our major outreach program of the year. Keep a look-out for local events on our website and Facebook and, as always, our National Delegates are on hand at any time. n www.dfa.org.au The Defence Families Australia team with Minister for Defence Personnel Dan Tehan, DFA National Convener Robyn Ritchie and Chief of the Defence Force Mark Binskin.
